unusual sunday

It’s called a lovers paradise because nobody disturbs the couples who sit together holding hands or just talking in whispers. Even the great police have stopped harassing the lovers and leave them alone.

The place right next to the Bandra highway is the new lover’s point that has built across the sea, cars and buses whiz by while lovers sit contentedly. We friends generally go there on weekends to enjoy the cold breeze, but last week as we all sat there, we saw a crowd ten meters away from us. We thought it there had been a motor accident, but well it was not an accident, it was a lover’s tiff and a young man and woman were screaming and shouting at each other.

The crowd seemed to be enjoying the free entertainment. We were just going to go back and sit, when I noticed an old man walking right up to the couple to say something and I went closer to listen. “Why do you shout in anger?” he asked, “why do people shout at each other when they are upset?”

The lovers stopped their fight and there was pin drop silence from the crowd also. “Because they have lost their calm, they shout,” said someone from the crowd.

“But, why do you shout when the other person is just next to you?” asked the old man. “Isn’t it possible to speak to him or her in a soft voice? Why do you shout at a person when you are angry?”

“Why?” the girl asked puzzled.

The old man looked at her and smiled, and in his eyes I saw understanding.

“When two people are angry with each other, their hearts distance themselves. To cover that distance they must shout to be able hear each other across that great distance!”

“But ,” continued the old man, “look at the other couples, all of them look so much in love with each other; when two people fall in love they don’t shout at each other but talk softly, because their hearts are very close. The distance between them is very small!”

I saw the couple look at each other, then at the old man who continued, “When a couple love each other even, more, what happens? They do not speak, they just understand them, and only eye contacts make it enough to understand their words. That is how people are when they are close to each other!”

I saw the crowd nodding and edged closer to the old man as he said, “When you argue do not let your hearts get distant, do not say words that distance is so great you will not find the path to return!”

It was silent crowd that walked away, and we go into the car, I saw the couple looking into each other’s eyes, not needing the words anymore to express their love, the old man then walked away smiling happily.
